Cloisonne Urns description:
Cloisonne is said to be the art of applying enamel of all colours to the surface of a copper or bronze object, which is then fired to apparently become a bright and colourful work of art. This technique claimed to reach its' perfection as a result of the efforts of Chinese artisans.
From then it was said that Chinese cloisonne became the standard by which to measure the quality and appraise the beauty of cloisonne world wide. This now ranks as one of China's major contributions to the world's fine arts.
Creating Cloisonne Urns:
The general method for making a cloisonne urn apparently involves first soldering brass wires to the surface of a copper or brass urn to form a pattern or illustration, then, according to the requirements of each pattern, colored enamels are filled in.
After the spaces made by brass wires on the copper object are filled in with enamel, the cloisonne urns are then fired. Its said that after every firing, the enamel will contract, producing an uneven surface.
It is apparently then necessary to fill in the uneven places with enamel paste of the same color. This procedure should be repeated many times until every filled-in space on the urn becomes smooth without any depressions. Only then is firing process of the cloisonne urn complete.
Cloisonne urns that have been fired then need to have their surface polished so that the soldered brass wire pattern and the enamel substance are joined into one. Finally, the exposed brass wires between parts of the patterns as well as the rim and the bottom of the cloisonne urns are highly polished and in some cases gold plated.
